Want to work in the WordPress space in a highly autonomous, flexible remote work environment with a smart and friendly team?

What we do

'The ‘a’ in aThemes stands for Awesome. That’s right—we don’t beat around the bush.

We create well-designed and easy to use WordPress themes, backed by speedy support and frequent updates. We have 100k+ users from around the world. Our blog reaches hundreds of thousands a month with our reviews, roundups, and guides.

Those numbers are growing. Needless to say, we could do with some help. That’s where you come in!

Who we are

We are a small, tight-knit team of 6, distributed globally. We don't mind where you work: from home, a co-working space, a coffee shop — wherever you feel the most inspired.

With a flat structure, you’ll work closely with the CEO and team to explore new ideas and run tests to identify the best ones to pursue.

If you see a better way to do something, we’re open to feedback. We don't believe things are set in stone. We want to find the best ideas and go big. We create the space and give you the autonomy to do that.

Who we’re looking for

  • We’re looking for go-getters with a desire for success — people who thrive in a highly autonomous work environment where they take ownership and can take an idea from conception to completion.
  • You’re truly an excellent communicator. We work 100% remotely primarily via Slack, Notion and other collaboration tools. Since the majority of our communication is written and often asynchronous, we’re looking for someone who can really communicate clearly and succinctly. We say what we mean, while still being friendly and respectful.
  • Output, not hours. We care about results. We care about the work you get done, not how long you can sit at your desk.
  • You love having ownership—you own what you do.
  • You can dive into the details and understand our users’ needs while still seeing the big picture strategy of where we’d like to take aThemes as a business.
  • You don't wait for perfection. The first release doesn't have to be perfect. We can iterate later.
  • You want to perfect your craft and become the best in the biz. You’ll be keen to work on personal as well as professional growth. We’ll give you the room to do that.
  • You believe in sustainable growth and the freedom and creativity that self-funded startups allow.
  • You love the ability to talk to a CEO as if he were your fellow colleague. No micromanagement.

While experience is important, your enthusiasm, mindset, and ability to improve and hone your craft is more important. We want to hire someone who is excited about aThemes, the world of WordPress, and what we do and wants to grow themselves to be in the top 10% of their peers.

Work (and life) with aThemes

At aThemes, you’ll see your ideas come to life.

We are completely self-funded and profitable since day one. We choose to work on the projects we believe will move the needle and grow the company sustainably — no investors defining what and how we work.

So, no, you won’t get snacks, ping pong or football tables. But those are not really benefits anyway, are they? They’re merely distractions from what really matters.

Being valued. Being paid fairly and having the freedom to work in a way that works for you. We are known to give raises for extraordinary work without you needing to ask for one—annual review time or not. What we care about are results.

We believe your work should be crafted around your personal life, not the other way around. That way, we hope you’re as energized and inspired at work as you are in your free time.

If you’re pumped after reading this, we’d love to hear from you.

Some practical things…

Our core working hours are 10am-2pm CET.

We communicate mainly on Slack with the occasional Zoom call.

We use Notion as our main collaboration tool—from our knowledge base, product and release roadmaps, project management, to goals and metrics tracking.

We have very few meetings, but in the ones we do, you can be in your pajamas — we don’t ask you to turn your camera on. The only thing we do ask for is a proactive attitude and commitment to do your best work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply from anywhere?

Yes, you can apply from anywhere in the world. However, many of our roles require that you live within GMT +/-4, as we want to make it easy for our team to co-work and communicate in real-time when needed. Our team's core working hours are between 10-2pm CET.

Do I have to be registered as a freelancer or contractor?

You’ll be hired as a contractor. Since every country has its own set of rules, you have the freedom to arrange this in the way that works best for you.

Do I get time off?

Of course you do! As a contractor, we can’t offer standard employee benefits like paid holidays, but you are free to take time off whenever needed (we appreciate a 2 week heads up so we can make sure there is coverage while you’re out).

What does ‘’core working hours’’ mean? Do I need to be online for those full 4 hours, or does it mean be available, just in case?

When we do calls or co-work— which isn’t too often — it happens within this core working time. As a 100% remote team that aims to do a majority of our work asynchronously, we want to be fair to our core team members and ensure that no one has to coordinate time outside their timezone to work with others.

It also means that ideally, if someone Slacks you during this time, you are not responding 12 hours later. We never expect immediate responses at any given time, but since we don’t often do calls or meetings, it’s respectful to be able to communicate and work with each other during these core working hours.

What does the application process look like?

  1. Complete the application questionnaire. We personally review every submission.
  2. If there’s a potential fit, we’ll get back to you via email with some follow-up questions.
  3. We set up a call to learn more about you and you can ask us questions. This will last approximately 30-45 minutes.
  4. In some cases — depending on the role — we'll ask you to complete a 2 hour paid project.
  5. We invite you to a paid trial week so we can see if it’s a good fit — from both sides.
  6. If we both agree it’s a good fit, we’ll make you an offer.

Don’t see an open role that fits your skillset and interests but you’d love to work for aThemes?

Submit an open application and if a role opens up that fits your profile, we’ll reach out!

Don’t worry, we truly mean it - we have actually hired someone months after he reached out because a role opened up that perfectly matched his skillset!
